Kate is a Weinberg Fellow from the class of 2007
Born and raised in and around New York City, Kathryn (Kate) Farinholt attended college at Carleton College, in Northfield, Minnesota and received her Juris Doctor from the Washington College of Law at the American University in Washington, D.C. Kate practiced law as an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (New York and Wilmington), and Semmes, Bowen & Semmes (Baltimore). Kate did not return to the practice of law after the birth of her second of three sons. Kate has worked with NAMI for more than 12 years, beginning as a local and state volunteer Board Member, then President of the local affiliate Board, and finally as the paid local Executive Director. Under her direction, the national NAMI Board of Directors chose NAMI-Metropolitan Baltimore as the “Outstanding Local Affiliate for 2004” from over 1500 local affiliates. Kate is a national and state NAMI trainer, helped develop several national NAMI signature programs and has piloted several others in Baltimore. Kate has consulted or served on a variety of task forces and work groups including National NAMI’s Standards workgroup, several relating to criminal justice and mental illness (co-chairing the Baltimore Joint Task Force on Police Response to Mental Illness and consulting with the Council of State Governments and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Department of Justice), and serves on the NAMI Executive Directors Executive Council. Kate is a graduate of Leadership Baltimore County. In October 2007, Kate became a Weinberg Fellow through the Schaefer Center for Public Policy, University of Baltimore. Kate lives in Baltimore, is married with three boys (19 to 26), and serves as the personal representative for her sister who has had paranoid schizophrenia for over 40 years and lives nearby.
